I’m not one prone to flock to most shopping events, especially during the holiday season when the crowds can awaken misanthrope feelings (cue in the line: “the pain was enough to make a shy, bald, Buddhist reflect and plan a mass murder”). But on a surprising whim, I decided we’d check into this year’s Unique LA show, mostly because I knew a recently made friend would have her booth there (a friendship seared over the flames of a memorable Korean BBQ meal, no less). Being a total sucker for terrariums AND miniatures, is it no surprise I find the works of Bianca D’Amico, aka Terri Planty, wondrously intriguing? Her works balance an obvious love of the natural world with a humourous playfulness (sometimes the blushing inducing type) which make the miniaturized worlds a storybook unto themselves. I came home with a more sedate $20 piece titled, The Photographer. It felt right, as this is basically a pint-sized version of myself while exploring trails.
Hey, that’s mini-me!
The other memorable vendor on the show floor was Sadie & Emma, a tandem of clay-loving ladies who sold us a pair of similar, but not the same, soup bowls. They didn’t have to do much selling, as both Emily and I could tell their bowls, plant potters, and other pottery creations exhibited the same organic aesthetic which makes Heath Ceramics so coveted, and it’s very likely we’ll be adding more pieces in future time.
Soup on a cold day is made even better when served in a beautiful bowl. Snapped this photo of my lunch today: torn baguette swimming in a bowl of roasted cauliflower soup, topped with a few parchment pieces of parmesan. Satisfying!
