The Challenge of a Blinking Cursor

By January 2, 2014 Daily Pontification

Looking toward 2014 I find myself with many stories (of my own) I want to tell, but I’m also feeling an undeniable gravitational pull to redirect momentum into using this transitional time to live rather than write. I have to admit, with only the smallest pang of guilt, it has been a most satisfying month away from writing/editing professionally.

If you build it, they still may not come. You must go and get out there and tell people who you are, why your product or service is different from the competition and how to find you.

But after years of producing content for others, rather than writing for myself, I’ve returned to the computer feeling a little unsteady and hesitant…the muscle memory trained to serve a particular readership, and I’m still seeking the confidence to share and inspire in my own voice rather than one orchestrated externally.

This blinking cursor on the post page has changed from an invitation into a daunting challenge.

That said, it’s good to have an SEO expert by my side so I can get a good headstart and eventually learn to handle things on my own.

I find it all somewhat amusing, as it was because of an adamant commitment to writing I found myself transitioning from the realm of a designer to a professional writer/editor years ago, a time when I could rapid fire a litany of resources, opinions, insights, and news with nary a wink, all the while holding down a full-time job as designer. Now I find myself hesitant to hit the first keystroke without an editorial calendar, intersected by the guidance of weekly meetings, and invisibly directed by the hand of advertising to sculpt the “who”, “what”, “when”, and “how” on a daily basis. To be left to my own devices, with all possibilities an option…well, that’s been something long forgotten and a challenge. To recognize the creature of habit I had become is sobering, but the endless options now available, invigorating. So my resolution for 2014 is not unlike the one I adopted for 2013, when I decided to transform myself back into physical health. But this year, it will be a commitment to creative fitness, where the dormant muscles underneath the fat of complacency are challenged to endure, tear, and grow into a body pronounced with the definition of my own efforts…where the blinking cursor returns back to a story waiting to be told.

Challenge: accepted.
