Despite her saucer eyes, beguiling voice and that certain je ne sais quoi that has made her an indie darling for years now, the partnership between Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward as She & Him has only elicited a lukewarm response on my iTunes rotation. Their sound comes off just a little too north of twee for me, their songs the musical equivalent of bon bons: delicious, but best enjoyed in small amounts.
Yet, here I find myself fully charmed by their musical midcentury styled homage to the golden age of American design. “Don’t Look Back” shimmys, shakes and even occasionally pouts in unabashedly fun technicolor dance party mode, all in the spirit of 1958’s “American Look“. And I dare say Ms. Deschanel makes a most marvelous model of Ms. MidCent Modernity. Zooey, be as twee as you want to be, because when you’re dressed so cute, how can I help but look back?
