I generally write in silence, but lately I’ve been experimenting with reintroducing music into my work day while writing. Since writing requires some clarity in thought, I usually avoid songs with distracting lyrical content, lest I find lyrics like Akinyele’s wise words of “put it in my mouth” making their way into posts. So, for the most part, my musical selections are ambient and instrumental, with an occasional distant vocal here and there. Below are my current 9 favorite albums* to listen to while working…albums chosen not only for their musical beauty, but also their writing compatible nature.
[From top left to right]
Trentemøller – The Last Resort
Byul – Take Care of My Cat Soundtrack
Lotus Plaza – Lotus Plaza
Blktop Project – Blktop Project
Boards Of Canada – Music Has the Right to Children
Harold Budd & Robin Guthrie – Mysterious Skin Soundtrack
Impactist – The Spring Field Farm Report
Ólafur Arnalds – Variations of Static
Arms And Sleepers – Black Paris 86
* The Immortal Beloved soundtrack was excluded only for the fact I wanted to create a 9×9 grid.
