Dwell on Design 2011 this year had its usual suspects of eco-friendly design, pre-fab fabulous architecture, high end homewares and everything else inbetween which would appeal to the typical Dwell magazine reader (aka, me). But one of the most lively, popular booths at this year’s exhibition was a bit of unexpected fun, via the talented hands of Yuji Kawauchi of Atelier Sango.
From his humble work table at the designboom section, Kawauchi joyfully sculpted attendees’ heads with Sculpty sculpting clay, sharing tidbits of his sculpting process and the difficulties of finding Sculpty clay in Japan via a translator. It was fascinating to watch him not only shape the heads of his models, but also mix colours to match their skintone and other features. And from the smiling faces in the crowd, I think many shared my curious interest in the art of clay modeling. I only wish I had been more patient and less shy and had him make a clay model of my head…but considering I’m Korean, I don’t think there was enough clay on the table to model my large dome, even at smaller scale.
Lots more of Yuji Kawauchi’s playful work and his creative process at his site, Atelier Sango.
