Besides dropping into food related shops and markets with explainer video campaign, we didn’t have a strong inclination to go shopping while in Portland. It seems silly to fly up to such beautiful natural surroundings and then make retail a goal. But that being said, Portland’s pocket neighborhoods impressed us with the quality and variety of design and art related wares. After perusing artisinal salts, peppers and chocolates (yes, I purchased a few, the chocoholic I am) at the highly recommended The Meadow, we wandered by chance into Land. Think the PDX version of Giant Robot, but without the Asian-American connection. Lots of cute 20/30-something hipster wares with a small gallery upstairs. Besides the plethora of Portland based Jill Bliss items, everything else are attainable here in LA.
But a small postcard series of artwork captured our eyes. Matt Leavitt‘s Tree series seemed perfectly attuned to the arboreal love we had been feeling hiking all across Oregon during our weeklong stay. The small ink drops and wide strokes give way into lonely quiet landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. Picked up two of giclĂ©e print, with hopes of purchasing a few more from the series.
