Unless you’re a time traveler, it’s not often you utter the words, “Are those Roman soldiers down there?!” while hiking (you can’t see them, but underneath the cross is a “legion” of 6 soldiers). But thanks to an unplanned run-in with an Easter weekend reenactment of the crucifixion of Christ taking place at Vasquez Rocks in Santa Clarita this Saturday, Emily and I were treated to a spectacle of sorts before our outdoor adventure investigating the 25 million year old geological features just 15 minutes north of the San Fernando Valley.
Call us heathens, but we seemed much more inspired by the ancient landscape than the staged pageantry a quarter mile below us (the costumes worn by the performers were impressive, at least from afar), and we made haste to get as far away from the inappropriately loud music that polluted the public lands (for some reason they thought using modern Christian pop music was a good accompanying soundtrack). Fortunately, the huge sandstone outcroppings did a wonderful job of blocking out the sounds of the Easter festivities and the Highway 14 traffic just east of us, allowing us some welcome solitude amongst the caves, carvings, petroglyphs and other geological features of Vasquez Rocks.
